The Hospital Payment Monitoring Program (HPMP), formerly known as the Payment Error Prevention Program (PEPP), is designed to work with hospitals in CMS's Prospective Payment System (PPS) to reduce inpatient services billing and payment errors. Methods used to address these errors include assessments of correct coding, DRG validation and determinations of medical necessity.
Under the HPMP, CIMRO of Nebraska monitors hospital admission and coding patterns by ongoing analysis of Medicare discharge data. Through this analysis, special projects and activities will be developed and implemented to address specific areas where payment errors may be occurring.
Additional information, related documents, forms and links can be found on this web site. In addition to focused projects and activities, CIMRO of Nebraska will continue to review all cases referred by the CMS Clinical Data Abstraction Center (CDAC). These cases are part of a random sample selected by CMS to determine statewide and national payment error rates.
