Pressure ulcers are a significant source of pain and human suffering in nursing homes. The elderly are at a higher risk for acquiring pressure ulcers because of multiple risk factors. These risk factors can include, but are not limited to immobility, incontinence, inadequate dietary intake, chronic illness, altered level of consciousness, altered sensory perception and loss of cognitive ability. A prior history of pressure ulcers can also put residents at a higher risk for developing subsequent pressure ulcers. A standardized approach to prevention and treatment can be a key element in reducing pressure ulcer rates in long-term care, reducing pain and suffering and decreasing costs for nursing homes.
